Mid-summer Update

Kale in the morning

Plants (other than weeds) are finally starting to sprout in the garden, blueberries are indeed ripening and salads ingredients have originated in the back field for a few weeks running now. There are also two ripe artichokes that keep escaping harvest. Fancy iced tea, morning dew drops adorning the baby kale and home-smoked trout are some other obvious highlights.

Some things you should know about coming up in August:

Wheat Fleet! A river float from Eugene to Corvallis in celebration of local grain growers is scheduled for August 19th-21st

The Willamette Country Music Festival is rolling into neighboring Brownsville August 20, 21, 22

Eugene Celebration Film Festival August 27-29

We’re making a labyrinth in the lower field, and building a tiny straw-bale guest house in the back field…. We might even adopt two friendly sheep to mow the grass. More updates to come…

Lecture/Workshop/Screening Series

A big part of this summer is about exchange: knowledge, ideas, good food! We want to share what we’re doing with the community as well, so each week we’ll be hosting a “dinner on the farm,” we’d like to include in this a lecture/screening series. If you have an area of expertise you’d like to share in a hands-on workshop, a topic to discuss, or a film project to screen, we are beginning to schedule the series. The First Update

It is already March, shades of green are beginning to replaces the browns and grays of winter. I was in Oregon two weeks ago and already picking egyptian bunching onions for our morning scrambled eggs.

Speaking of eggs! Susanne, our friend and neighbor across the path, has a fleet of chickens lined up and ready for egg laying. In the back field, I planted sunchokes and weeded the asparagus bed. The blueberries have been pruned and mulched, the compost piles are ready, the field has been plowed.
